We were thrilled to receive funding from the New Scots programme to host our Ukrainian friends for a Kitchen Ceilidh. Today we think of a Ceilidh as a dance, but originally it was a gathering of friends to play music, recite poetry, tell stories and be merry! Robert Burns reports having these sorts of gatherings at his dwellings, and in the atmospheric setting of Cruck Cottage you can almost imagine what it would have been like to live in a rural community during the 18th century. As well as performances, our guests were treated to some ‘Scottish fare’ including bannocks, oatcakes, Dumfries and Galloway cheeses, Scottish tablet, shortbread and much more. There were many conversations over the food, before more entertainment and finishing with Auld Lang Syne. We are looking forward to more planned activities and building an ongoing relationship.
One of our performers recited this verse from the National Bard, which is a poignant reminder to capture happiness whilst you can in good company:
Here’s a Bottle and an honest friend!
What wad ye wish for Mair, man?
Wha kens, before his life may end,
What his share may be o care, man.
Then catch the moments as they fly,
And use them as ye ought, man!
Believe me, Happiness is shy,
And comes not ay when sought, man!
