Cruck Cottage Heritage

Cruck Cottage Heritage Association

In 2003, the Cruck Cottage Heritage Association was formed by a group of local residents. The aim of the Association, with the co-operation of the owners, Solway Heritage, was to maintain the cottage in good condition, raise the necessary funds, and promote and encourage access by both the local, and wider, community.

Over the years since, we have arranged open days, craft demonstrations, school visits, musical and story telling evenings and the like. Short films and adverts have also been filmed in the cottage. Routine maintenance and repairs have been carried out as required, and also a full re-thatch carried out.

In 2022, the title of the group was changed to ‘Cruck Cottage Heritage’, (CCH) and we registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation with the Office of Scottish Charity Regulator. A board of Trustees was also formed.

Visitors are always welcome at any reasonable time, but we are also very keen to host organised group visits, when the peat fire will be lit, and presentations given on the history of the cottage and the village, and an explanation of the construction of the cottage.

CCH is always ready to welcome new members. If you have a genuine interest in the Cruck Cottage in particular, or the Torthorwald area in general, and would like to become involved, please get in touch.

CCH relies heavily on donations from visitors and friends to maintain the cottage and cover other major expenses, such as insurance. Any donations will be gratefully received and faithfully applied.

The generosity of visitors and friends with donations and help over the years has been outstanding, for which we are most grateful.

Local Family History

One of our members, Willie Clow, has, for many years, carried out research of the family history of residents and people with connections with the village and surrounding area. If you are looking for information about any of your ancestors who lived in Torthorwald area, please let us know, and Willie will be only too pleased to help. Whilst Willie does not charge for his research, modest donations to CCH funds are always welcome.
