Cruck Cottage is in the village of Torthorwald, about 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Dumfries. Take the A709 towards Lochmaben and Lockerbie. As you enter the village you will pass Torthorwald Castle on your right, and you take the second left down Shieldhill Road. Cruck Cottage is on your left about 150 metres along this road. Please park by the roadside, but avoid blocking other people’s driveways. If you have mobility issues, then please drive up to the front door and move the car to the roadside after drop-off.
There is a regular bus service to Torthorwald Village from Dumfries and Lockerbie.
Access
The cottage is open year round for guided and group visits. Throughout the main season (April-September) it opens at least once a month for special events, with a programme of evening activities and talks. Details can be found on the website and social media. At all other times a key holder list can be found in the cottage window and one of our friendly neighbours will let you in. Entry is free but contributions towards the upkeep of the Cottage are always welcome.
Cruck Cottage is a single storey building with level access. However, the driveway is cobbled and the interior of the building has an uneven earthen floor. Visitors with mobility issues are welcome to be dropped off and picked up at the door and we ask the driver to then remove and park the car on the roadside. There is ample seating within the cottage.
For those with sensory issues, there is often a peat fire burning and the thatch does create dust. There are no audio-visual presentations.
Interpretation is in the form of panels, but there is always a volunteer on hand to talk visitors through the history of the building.
